A Court of Thorns and Roses Review
Feyre's survival rests upon her ability to hunt and kill – the forest where she lives is a cold, bleak place in the long winter months. So when she spots a deer in the forest being pursued by a wolf, she cannot resist fighting it for the flesh. But to do so, she must kill the predator and killing something so precious comes at a price … Dragged to a magical kingdom for the murder of a faerie, Feyre discovers that her captor, his face obscured by a jewelled mask, is hiding far more than his piercing green eyes would suggest. Feyre's presence at the court is closely guarded, and as she begins to learn why, her feelings for him turn from hostility to passion and the faerie lands become an even more dangerous place. Feyre must fight to break an ancient curse, or she will lose him forever. (Image and Synopsis from Goodreads)
I have read this book 2 times and loved it both times, but for completely different reasons! The first time, I fell in love the world. The second time, I fell in love with the characters. It did take reading the series and then re-reading the first book for me to understand everything that was going on, but there are so many moving parts to this series.
I love how the characters are developed in this story! They are so incredibly dynamic and it is amazing to watch them grow and change. A problem I find with high fantasy is that since there are so many characters, it is hard to differentiate them. But that is not a problem in this book. Each character has a separate and unique personality and backstory, which makes reading about them all the more interesting. The characters were believable, with motives that were not too far out of the realm of possibility. Feyre was a wonderful heroine, her character development alone makes the story worth reading!
The relationships between the characters are incredibly realistic, which is again very refreshing for a high fantasy novel. Most of the relationships have the love to hate sort of feeling about them, but it makes interactions all the more lighthearted and engaging. The romance in this book is similar in the style these interactions. This story is loosely based on beauty and the beast, so I am sure you know where it is going. We have the fair maiden that falls in love with the broken monster. Yet as I read this book, the story felt refreshed and unique. I loved the romance the first time, but the second time I had some problems with it. I do not want to spoil things, but in retrospect Tamlin seems abusive and possessive, which made it difficult for me to read the scenes in which they were together.
I love the plot of this book! The way all of the pieces move together to culminate into a grand finale is so beautiful! The plot is full and works well within the world. The world development was lovely, as per usual for Sarah! I still have questions, but we were given the information we needed when we needed it. There was no info-dumping, either. The puzzle was easy to fit together, we just needed to be given all the pieces!
The writing was gorgeous, as usual. Both times I read this book, I couldn’t put the it down because I was there in the moment and had to know what happened! Sarah’s writing had me captivated, even after I knew how it all ended. This was a fantastic first book in an even more fantastic series! Both times, I gave these books 5/5 stars! I really love this book and it will always have a special place in my heart!
